Soy Candle Troubleshooting: Tunneling, Frosting, Wet Spots, Sinkholes, and Weak Scent

Anyone who has made more than three candles has hit at least one of the problems below. The good news: almost all of them have one or two specific causes, and most can be fixed without throwing out the batch. Here they are, most common first.
Tunneling: the candle burns only down the middle
A deepening tunnel forms around the wick while a ring of untouched wax stays at the walls. This is the most common problem, and in the vast majority of cases it is the wick's fault, not the wax.
- Cause 1: wick too small. The flame does not produce enough heat to melt the pool to the edge. Fix in the next batch: one size up. Chart in the wick size guide.
- Cause 2: first burn too short. Wax has memory: if you put out the first burn with a 1.5 inch pool in a 3 inch jar, every burn after stops at the same diameter. Run the first burn to a full pool (2-4 hours).
- Cause 3: too much fragrance or dye. They clog the wick and shrink the flame.
- Cause 4: a tall, narrow container. The flame runs short of oxygen at the bottom.
Frosting: white crystalline patches
A whitish, snowy bloom on the surface or sides of the candle, especially visible on colored ones. It is a natural trait of soy wax: crystallization of triglycerides with temperature change. It does not affect burn or scent; it is purely cosmetic.
- Reduce it with slow cooling in a warm room, warming containers before pouring, pouring at the low end of the range (130-140°F), and avoiding temperature swings in storage.
- You cannot eliminate it entirely in pure soy. If frosting bothers you, consider a soy-coconut blend or a low-frost soy blend.
- Hide it by leaving the wax its natural cream color: on white, frosting is invisible.
Wet spots: wax pulling away from the glass
Patches where the wax has detached from the wall and looks as if there is moisture behind it. It is an air pocket between wax and glass, formed when the wax shrinks while cooling faster than it adheres to the container. Also purely cosmetic.
- Warm containers to 100-120°F before pouring.
- Pour at 130-150°F, not hotter.
- Ensure slow, even cooling: no drafts, not on a cold counter, candles spaced apart.
- Wash and degrease the glass: residue and dust encourage separation.
- A finished candle with a wet spot can be warmed from the outside with a heat gun; sometimes the wax re-adheres.

Sunken top, sinkhole around the wick
The wax sinks in the center while cooling, sometimes forming a crater or a hole reaching deep down. Cause: pouring too hot (above 160°F) or the outer layer cooling too fast. Fix: pour at 130-150°F, and if the crater is already there, do a second pour with a thin layer of wax heated to 150-160°F, or smooth the top with a heat gun. Rough, lumpy top
The surface looks like orange peel or has visible lumps. Cause: pouring wax that was too cool (below 120°F) and already crystallizing in the pitcher, or a draft while cooling. Fix: reheat the pitcher to 140°F and pour again; smooth a finished top with a heat gun.
Soot and black smoke
- Wick too long: trim to 1/4 inch before every burn.
- Wick too big: flame 1.5-2 inches, dancing, glass very hot. Size down.
- Too much fragrance: unbound oil burns unevenly. Max 10%.
- Draft: a flickering flame always soots. Move the candle.
- Pigment instead of dye: crayon, mica, spices. Only oil-soluble candle dyes.
Mushrooming wick
A ball of carbon on the tip of the wick that grows during the burn and causes soot and a large flame. It forms when the wick draws more wax and oil than it can burn: the wick is too big for the fragrance load, the load is too high, or dye has built up on the wick. Trim before every burn, and in the next batch go down a wick size or 1-2% of fragrance.
Weak scent

Sweating: oil droplets on the surface
Fragrance oil escapes the wax and forms droplets or an oily film on the top and walls. Causes: a load above 10%, oil added to wax that was too cool, too little stirring, or big temperature swings (the candle sat in the sun or by a heater). Fix: blot the oil with a paper towel before burning; in the next batch reduce the load and stir a full 2 minutes at 175°F.
Cracks in the wax
Lines and cracks across the top or side of the candle. Almost always cooling too fast: a cold container, a cold kitchen, the fridge. Pour in a warm room into warmed containers and leave the candles alone for several hours. Surface cracks smooth out with a heat gun.
Wick drowns, candle goes out
Melted wax floods the wick and the flame dies. The wick is too small, too long and bent over, or too much fragrance has softened the wax. Short term: pour off the excess melted wax onto paper, trim the wick, relight. Next batch: wick one size up.
Uneven burn, pool shifted to one side
The wick is off center or the candle is in a draft. Extinguish, straighten the warm wick with a skewer, move the candle. In future, check centering right after pouring while the wax is still liquid.
How to test so you stop repeating mistakes
- Change only one thing between batches: wick, fragrance load, or temperature, never all at once.
- Log every batch: wax, oil and load, dye, wick, temperatures, pour date, burn observations.
- Test after 14 days, not one.
- Test burn in 3-4 hour cycles and record pool diameter and depth and flame appearance every hour.

Why is my soy candle tunneling?
Most often because the wick is too small for the container diameter, or the first burn was too short and the pool never reached the walls. Less often, too much fragrance or dye. Quick rescue: aluminum foil around the top of the jar for 2-3 hours of burning.
Is frosting on a soy candle a defect?
No. Frosting is natural crystallization of soy wax that does not affect burn or scent. You can reduce it with slow cooling and warmed containers, but in pure soy it cannot be fully eliminated.
