Why Is My Soy Candle Tunneling? Causes and How to Fix It

Tunneling is when a candle burns straight down the center, leaving a ring of unmelted wax built up around the jar walls. It's the most common soy candle complaint, and it almost always comes down to one of three causes.

Cause 1 - the wick is too small for the container. If the flame isn't generating enough heat to melt wax all the way to the edges, the candle will tunnel from the very first burn. Check your wick against a sizing chart for your container's diameter.

Cause 2 - the first burn was too short. The first burn sets the "memory" of the candle - if you extinguish it before the top layer melts completely to the edges, every burn after that will follow the same narrow path. Always let the first burn run until there's a full melt pool edge to edge, even if that takes 3-4 hours.

Cause 3 - drafts or extinguishing too early on later burns. A draft from a window or vent can push the flame off-center and disrupt an even melt, and habitually blowing out a candle before the surface fully liquefies will slowly re-establish a tunnel over time.

Fixing a candle that's already tunneling: wrap aluminum foil around the outside of the jar (leaving the top open) and relight it - the foil traps extra heat and helps the wax melt out to the edges over one or two burns. This won't work miracles on a severely tunneled candle, but it recovers most cases.

If tunneling keeps happening across multiple batches, the wick size is almost always the real issue rather than anything about how it's being burned - it's worth troubleshooting that first before changing your burning habits.
