How to Make Soy Candles at Home: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide
A tested recipe for your first soy candle: the supply list, exact melt and pour temperatures, fragrance load, wick sizing, cure time, and the mistakes that trip up most beginners. Everything in one place.

You can make a soy candle in your kitchen in one afternoon with no specialist equipment. The catch is that the difference between a candle that burns evenly and fills a room with scent and one that tunnels and barely smells comes down to a handful of numbers: pour temperature, fragrance percentage, and wick size. This guide gives you those numbers, not just a vague description of the process.
We write from the perspective of a workshop that pours soy candles every day. Everything below has been checked on our own batches, including the mistakes we would rather not have made.
What you need to make a soy candle
- Container soy wax (for example Golden Wax 464, C-3, or Kerax KeraSoy 4130). Pillar soy wax is harder and pulls away from the glass in a jar.
- Pre-tabbed cotton wicks sized to your container. For a jar about 2.5 to 3 inches (6-7 cm) across, start with ECO 10-12 or CD 12-14. Details in our candle wick size chart.
- Candle fragrance oil (not aromatherapy essential oil, and not wax-melt or diffuser oil unless it is explicitly rated for candles).
- A heat-safe container: a glass jar, glazed ceramic, or a metal tin. Thin decorative glass cracks.
- A thermometer that reads to at least 250°F (120°C). This is the most important tool on the list.
- A kitchen scale accurate to 1 gram (0.05 oz). Wax and fragrance are always weighed, never measured by volume.
- A pouring pitcher (metal, with a spout) and a saucepan for a double boiler.
- Something to center the wick: a clothespin, two skewers with a rubber band, or a wick-centering tool.
- Optional: candle dye, wick stickers or a hot-glue gun, and a heat gun for smoothing tops.
How much wax and fragrance to weigh out
The simplest rule: fill the container with water to your planned fill line, weigh the water, and multiply that weight by 0.86 to get the weight of wax. Add fragrance oil at 6-10% of the wax weight (we recommend 8% for a first batch).

How to make a soy candle, step by step

Prepare the containers and wicks
Wash and thoroughly dry the containers. Stick the wick tab to the exact center of the base with a wick sticker or a dab of hot glue. Straighten the wick and hold it in place with your centering tool. If your kitchen is cold, warm the containers with a heat gun or in a low oven to about 100-120°F (40-50°C) so the wax does not set too fast against the glass.

Weigh the wax and melt it in a double boiler
Put the weighed flakes in the pitcher, stand the pitcher in a saucepan of water, and heat gently. Soy wax starts melting around 115-130°F (45-55°C), but do not stop there: bring it to 175-185°F (80-85°C). At that temperature the flakes are fully dissolved and the fragrance oil you add next will bind properly. Never melt wax directly in a pan on the burner, because it overheats in spots.

Add dye (optional)
Dye goes into the hot wax before the fragrance oil. Stir until fully dissolved. The color in liquid wax is always darker than the finished candle. More in our guide to dyeing soy candles.

Add the fragrance oil and stir for 2 minutes
Take the pitcher off the heat. At about 175°F (80°C), or whatever your wax manufacturer recommends (usually 165-185°F), pour in the weighed fragrance oil and stir gently but continuously for a full 2 minutes. Stirring too briefly is one of the main causes of weak scent and oil sweating out of the surface.

Cool the wax to pouring temperature
Set the pitcher aside and stir occasionally until the wax cools to 130-150°F (55-65°C) for most container soy waxes. Pouring too hot causes sunken tops and wet spots on the glass; pouring too cold gives a rough, lumpy surface. The exact numbers for different waxes are in our guide to soy wax pouring temperature.

Pour
Pour slowly in a thin stream, down the side of the container or down the wick. Leave about half an inch (1 cm) of space from the rim. Re-center the wick immediately. Do not move the containers, and keep them out of drafts and off cold countertops: slow, even cooling gives a smooth top.

Wait, then trim the wick
After the wax has fully set (at least 12-24 hours), trim the wick to 1/4 inch (5-6 mm). If the top has small imperfections, pass a heat gun over it briefly and it will smooth out.

Let the candle cure
This is the step beginners skip most often. A soy candle needs at least 7 days, ideally 14, at room temperature for the fragrance oil to fully bind with the wax. A candle lit the day after pouring will smell noticeably weaker than the same candle after two weeks.

First burn: to a full melt pool
For the first burn, keep the candle lit until the melted wax reaches the walls of the container, usually 2-4 hours (roughly one hour per inch of diameter). That first full melt pool sets the candle's memory and prevents tunneling. The full set of rules is in our guide on how to burn a soy candle.

The most common beginner mistakes
- Measuring wax by eye or by volume. Flakes trap a lot of air. A scale is the only reliable method.
- Adding fragrance to wax that is too cool. Below 160°F (70°C) the oil does not bind well and the scent comes out weak.
- Pouring straight after adding fragrance. Wax at 175°F in a jar gives a sunken top and bubbles.
- Wick too small. A flame the size of a grain of rice and a tunnel down the middle is the wick's fault nine times out of ten, not the wax.
- Burning the next day. An uncured candle does not show what it can really do.
- Judging scent from a single candle. Make at least two from the same batch, test-burn one after 7 days and the other after 14.

Making unscented soy candles
The process is identical, you just skip the fragrance step. An unscented soy candle is ideal for the dinner table or a bedroom and tolerates a slightly smaller wick, because fragrance oil usually demands extra flame power. What temperature should I melt soy wax to?
Bring soy wax to 175-185°F (80-85°C) in a double boiler. It starts melting around 120°F, but only at the higher temperature does it take fragrance oil and dye properly. Do not exceed 195°F (90°C): the wax discolors and loses its properties.
How much fragrance oil do I add to a soy candle?
6-10% of the wax weight. Per pound (16 oz) of wax that is 1 to 1.6 oz of fragrance oil; start at 8% (about 1.3 oz per pound). More than 10% does not give a stronger scent, just oil sweating on the surface and a worse burn.
How long after making a soy candle can I light it?
Technically after 24 hours, but properly only after 7-14 days of curing. During that time the fragrance oil binds with the wax and the hot throw is noticeably stronger.
Can I make soy candles without a thermometer?
You can, but the result will be a lottery. A thermometer costs a few dollars and is the best money in the whole kit: the temperature at which you add fragrance and pour decides both the scent and the look of the candle.
Why does my first soy candle smell weak?
The most common causes, in order: not enough cure time (less than 7 days), too little fragrance oil or an oil not made for candles, adding the oil to wax that was too cool, and a wick too small to create a full melt pool.
