Soy Candle Frosting and Wet Spots: Are They Actually a Problem?
If you've made more than a couple of soy candles, you've probably seen frosting or wet spots and wondered if you did something wrong. In almost every case, the answer is no.
What frosting is: a light, crystalline, slightly rough white texture that can appear on the surface or sides of a soy candle. It happens because soy wax is a natural product, and its fatty acid molecules can recrystallize as the wax cools and ages - especially with temperature changes.
What wet spots are: small gaps or bubbles that form between the cooled wax and the inside of a glass container, visible as lighter, translucent-looking patches from the outside. They happen because wax contracts more than glass does as it cools, and the two surfaces pull apart slightly in places.
Neither one affects safety, burn quality, or scent throw. Both are purely cosmetic, and many soy candle makers - us included - consider a bit of frosting a natural sign of an unprocessed, 100% soy wax rather than something to hide.
If you want to minimize them anyway: pour at a slightly lower temperature (closer to 135°F rather than 145°F+), avoid moving or jostling candles while they're setting, and let candles cool at a stable room temperature rather than somewhere with fluctuating heat, drafts, or cold surfaces underneath.
What won't reliably fix it: additives marketed to "prevent" frosting can help at the margins, but frosting is a natural property of soy wax's chemistry - some batches will show more of it than others regardless of technique, particularly as candles age.
