How to Burn a Soy Candle Properly: First Burn, Wick Trimming, and Safety
How to burn a soy candle so it burns evenly, never tunnels, and lasts longer: the first-burn rule, trimming the wick, maximum burn time, how to extinguish, storage, and the safety checklist.

A well-made soy candle can burn badly if it is burned badly. It sounds like a joke, but about half the complaints we have seen in our workshop were about candles that tunneled or sooted because the first burn was cut short after 40 minutes or the wick was never trimmed. Here is the full set of instructions, the same ones we include with our candles.
Rule one: the first burn goes to a full melt pool
Soy wax has a memory: on later burns it only melts out to the diameter it reached the first time. If you put out the first burn with a 1 inch pool in a 3 inch jar, the candle will tunnel for the rest of its life. So keep the first burn going until the melted wax reaches the walls of the container: usually 2-4 hours, roughly one hour per inch of diameter.
Before every burn: trim the wick
Trim the wick to 1/4 inch (5-6 mm) for cotton, or 1/8 to 3/16 inch for wood, before every lighting. A long wick gives a tall, unsteady flame, soots, and blackens the glass; a ball of carbon (a mushroom) builds on the tip and makes the flame even bigger. Use scissors or a wick trimmer, and lift the trimmed piece out of the wax.
How long to burn at a time
| Rule | Value |
|---|---|
| Minimum per session (after the first) | 1-2 hours, to a full pool |
| Maximum per session | 4 hours |
| Gap between sessions | until fully set, at least 2 hours |
| Pool depth | about 1/2 inch; deeper means the wick is too big or the burn too long |
After 4 hours the glass overheats, the pool gets too deep, and the wick starts drawing more wax than it can burn. Too-short burns, on the other hand, lead to tunneling. A rhythm of 2-3 hours once a day is the sweet spot, including for total burn time: more in how long do soy candles burn.
Where to put the candle
- On a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface. Not on a tablecloth, a book, plastic, or bare wood.
- Away from drafts: windows, fans, air vents, walkways. A flickering flame soots and melts the wax unevenly.
- At least 4 inches from other candles and 12 inches from curtains, shelves, plants, and anything flammable.
- Out of reach of children and pets.
- Out of direct sun (soy wax softens at 105-115°F).
How to extinguish
Best is a snuffer, or dipping the wick into the melt pool with a wick dipper and immediately straightening it: no smoke, and the wick is primed for the next lighting. Blowing out splatters wax and leaves a trail of smoke that smells burnt and settles on the glass. After extinguishing, check that the wick is upright and re-center it while the wax is soft.
When to stop burning the candle
When about 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom. Below that the flame sits too close to the base, the glass can crack from overheating, and the wick tab can come loose and shift. Scrape out the leftover wax for a wax warmer and reuse the clean container.
Storage
- Covered (lid or foil), at room temperature, out of the sun. An uncovered candle loses scent within weeks.
- Not in the bathroom or on a windowsill: humidity and temperature swings cause frosting and sweating.
- A scented candle keeps its full scent for about 12 months; after that it still burns fine but smells weaker.
Safety checklist
The short version
- First burn: 2-4 hours, to a full pool.
- Before every burn: wick to 1/4 inch.
- Per session: 2-3 hours, never more than 4.
- No drafts, on a heat-safe surface.
- Snuff, do not blow.
- Stop at 1/2 inch of wax.
If the candle still tunnels or soots despite all this, the problem is in the candle itself: diagnosis in the soy candle troubleshooting guide.
Frequently asked questions
How long should you burn a soy candle the first time?
Until the melted wax reaches the walls of the container, usually 2-4 hours (about one hour per inch of diameter). A short first burn causes tunneling for the rest of the candle's life.
How short should I trim a soy candle wick?
To 1/4 inch before every lighting. A long wick gives too big a flame, soots, and forms a carbon ball on the tip. Trim wood wicks to 1/8 to 3/16 inch.
Can you burn a soy candle for more than 4 hours?
It is not recommended. After 4 hours the container overheats, the pool gets too deep, and the wick starts to soot. Put it out, let it set, and relight.
Why shouldn't you blow out a candle?
Blowing splatters wax, leaves a trail of burnt-smelling smoke, and deposits soot on the glass. A snuffer, or dipping the wick into the wax and straightening it, is cleaner.
