Making a candle that burns is easy. Making a scented candle you can smell across the room is the craft. Most homemade candles smell lovely in the jar and almost not at all once lit, and the cause is always one of the same four things: the wrong oil, too little oil, oil added at the wrong temperature, or a candle lit too soon. This guide takes each one apart.

Cold throw and hot throw
Cold throw is how an unlit candle smells. Hot throw is how it smells while burning, and that is what decides whether a candle is a success. A candle can have a great cold throw and no hot throw, because different things drive it: the size of the melt pool, the temperature of that pool, and how well the oil is bound into the wax. Everything below is about improving hot throw.
Step 1: choose the right oil
Candles use candle fragrance oils, compositions designed to bind with wax and release at flame temperature. The maker states a maximum load and a flash point. Wax-melt, soap, and diffuser oils may not bind with wax or may burn poorly.

Step 2: weigh the right load
The standard load is 6-10% of the wax weight. Counterintuitively, more oil does not mean more scent: above 10% the wax cannot bind the excess, oil sweats to the surface, the wick clogs, and the candle smells weaker than it did at 8%. Exact conversions and differences between scents are in how much fragrance oil per pound of wax. Always weigh fragrance, ideally on a scale accurate to 0.1 g.
Step 3: add the oil at the right temperature
Heat the soy wax in a double boiler to 175-185°F (80-85°C), take it off the heat, and only then pour in the oil. At that temperature the wax is fully liquid with low viscosity and the oil molecules disperse evenly. Adding fragrance at 140°F, right before pouring, is one of the most common reasons for weak scent: the oil does not bind in time and partly settles against the walls.
Step 4: stir for 2 minutes
After adding the oil, stir gently but continuously for a full 2 minutes (time it; it is longer than you think). Circular motion plus a few passes from the bottom. Do not whip, to avoid adding air. A quick stir with a spoon spreads the oil unevenly: one candle from the batch smells strong, the next barely at all.
Step 5: pour at 130-150°F and let it cool slowly
Cool the wax, stirring now and then, to the pour temperature for your wax (for most container soy waxes 130-150°F). Pour and leave the containers in a calm, warm place. Rapid cooling (a windowsill, the fridge) degrades the wax structure and the fragrance binding.
Step 6: curing, the most important week
After setting, the oil keeps binding with the wax for days. A soy candle needs at least 7 days, ideally 14. In our workshop tests, the same candle lit on day two and after two weeks differs in hot throw as if it had half the fragrance. Keep candles at room temperature, covered (a lid or foil), out of the sun.
Step 7: wick and melt pool
Scent is released from the surface of the melt pool. A small pool means little scent, regardless of the fragrance load. The wick must be sized so the pool reaches the walls in 2-3 hours. The hot throw test
- After 14 days, light the candle in a closed room of about 150-200 sq ft.
- Leave for 15 minutes and judge the scent from the doorway when you come back. This is the most reliable test, because your nose adapts within minutes.
- After 2 hours check the pool: it should reach the walls and be about half an inch deep.
- Write it down: wax, oil, load, temperature added, wick, and a scent score from 1 to 5. Without notes you cannot improve the next batch.

How much fragrance oil per pound of soy wax?
1 to 1.6 oz per pound, which is 6-10%. Start at 8% (about 1.3 oz per pound). Loads above 10% usually give a weaker scent and oil sweating on the surface.
What temperature do you add fragrance oil to soy wax?
After taking the wax off the double boiler, at 175-185°F (or as the wax maker recommends, usually 165-185°F). Adding fragrance to wax below 160°F is a common cause of weak scent.
Can you make scented candles with essential oils?
Yes, but the scent while burning will be much softer than with candle fragrance oils, and citrus and mint oils largely evaporate during mixing. Heavier notes work best: lavender, cedarwood, patchouli.
How long should a soy candle cure before burning?
At least 7 days, ideally 14. During that time the oil binds with the wax and the hot throw grows noticeably. A candle lit the day after pouring smells far weaker than it could.
Does more fragrance oil mean a stronger candle?
No. Soy wax binds about 10-12% oil; the excess sweats out, clogs the wick, and hurts the burn. You get a stronger scent through the right wick (a bigger melt pool), a full cure, and choosing a stronger oil, not by going past 10%.
