How to Dye Soy Candles: Dye Types, Amounts, When to Add, and Mixing Colors

Soy wax takes dye easily, but differently from paraffin: its naturally creamy, opaque base means every color comes out pastel and milky. That is a feature if you like muted tones and a limitation if you dream of deep black or burgundy. Here is everything you need to hit the color on the first try.

When to add dye to soy wax
Add dye to wax melted to 175-185°F (80-85°C), before the fragrance oil. Blocks and flakes need that heat to fully dissolve; at 140°F they leave streaks and specks. Stir until every particle is gone (blocks: 2-3 minutes), then add the fragrance and stir another 2 minutes. The full temperature sequence: what temperature to pour soy wax.
How much dye: start low, add more
- Start with half the amount in the chart. The color in liquid wax is always several shades darker than the set candle.
- Make a test chip: drip a spoonful of wax onto foil or parchment and wait 2-3 minutes. That is the finished color.
- Add dye in small increments, stirring and making a test chip each time.
- Write down the amount per pound of wax. Next time you will hit it straight away.

Mixing colors in wax
Candle dyes mix like paint, with the difference that the base is cream, not white. Yellow comes out warmer in soy, blue slightly greenish, pink peachy. Worth allowing for.

Dyeing techniques
Solid color
The standard: dye the whole batch, stir thoroughly, pour at 130-150°F. The slower the candle cools, the more even the color.
Layers
Pour each color after the previous layer has set on the surface but is still warm (about 30-45 minutes). Pour the new wax at 130-140°F: too hot melts and blends the layers, too cold fails to bond and the layers separate.
Ombre (gradient)
Pour the bottom layer saturated, then add plain wax to the rest before each subsequent layer to lighten the shade. 3-4 layers are enough for a clear gradient in an 8 oz jar.
Marbling
Fill the container with base wax, wait 1-2 minutes, drip in a few drops of wax in another color, and drag a skewer through once or twice. Do not stir more: the marble effect comes from single strokes.
Natural dyes
Turmeric, paprika, spirulina, activated charcoal, and other powders are pigments, not dyes: they do not dissolve in wax, they settle to the bottom, and they clog the wick. They can be used only in very small amounts (a pinch per pound), in mold candles where a clean flame is not the goal, or as decoration on the top. If you want a natural look, the best option is to leave the wax its natural cream color and work with the color of the container and label instead.
